Happiness is Celebrating the Little Things

The snow keeps piling on.  If you live in Central NY, it's been snowing non-stop since at least Saturday.  Mother Nature is making up for no snow accumulation October-November.  And she's doing so in a big way!  Are you one that doesn't like the snow?  I know I enjoy it because it can be very pretty, calming, and quiet.  The catch is, I enjoy it most when I am sitting quietly inside, cozy, and have nowhere to be.  When it comes to having to walk or drive anywhere, my opinion changes dramatically.

Weather can have quite the effect on a person's mood.  In my opinion, most people who live in the Northeast (at least) are somehow affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  In the winter the days are shorter and the weather is typically far more cloudy, so you see less sun.  This is an actual diagnosable condition, but if you find yourself feeling a little down in the winter months, take some time to think of all those little things in your life that make your day.

Try spending sometime focusing on what makes you happy more than what bothers or annoys you.  If you find yourself complaining about a situation, counteract it with a "but it could be worse because..." and insert what would make the situation worse.  Then try to do some little things that make you feel good.  Do you enjoy sitting down and drinking some hot chocolate while catching up on the days news?  Do that!  Does simply stringing some twinkle lights help put you in the holiday spirit and elevate your mood?  String some lights!  Do you miss the colors and life of flowers around outside?  Get yourself a bunch of silk flowers to decorate an empty vase or treat yourself to an African Violet or cheap assortment of flowers from the grocery store.  Are you struggling to think of some of those little things in life?  Check out this Things to be Happy About website. It has lots of different things to check out, including Things to be Happy About today.

Remember.  Happiness is Celebrating the little things.  The more you celebrate the little things, the smaller the bad things seem.
